As we count down the last few days before the new year, we reflected on the greatest marketing trends of 2017 and looked ahead to what we believe will really kick 2018 to the next level.
Whether you like social media or not, it is by far the most popular for of communication today, and if you want people to notice your brand, social media must play a big part in your digital marketing strategy.
Social media is an ever changing landscape, and keeping up with it is a must. Here are several trends we believe you should focus on going into 2018.
The fact is, people connect with things they can see, and this makes visual content the most effective content. Statistics have continuously proven visual content to be more engaging and more effective than non-visual content.
So what type of visual content will be the most effective in 2018? High quality images and Video.
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, even LinkedIn, have all implemented video. There's a reason YouTube is one of the largest social platforms. Video allows you to engage your audience! If you have the time and the resources, focus on creating quality video content.
Right behind video is high quality images. Instagram outgrew Facebook this year because it's focused on the visual aspect of things. Visual content that is relevant to your audience will absolutely catch their attention.
Popularly referred to as Influencer Marketing, social content has been a rising trend. No longer just focused on influencers with huge followings, micro-influencers are now taking a piece of the cake.
Influencers create compelling content that tends to appear organic. Consumers, especially with the younger crowd, prefer content that feels like "salesy" and more natural. Subtle, sponsored content certainly accomplishes this well.
Marketers and customers are both jumping aboard when it comes to livestreams. Snapchat started this trend way back when. Since then, Facebook and Instagram have both joined in. With live-streaming videos and the Snapchat-like storie features, you can now engage your audience in the heat of the moment.
According to Facebook, users spend 3x more time watching live videos and comment 10x more during a live video-stream.
While the idea of live streaming may sound unnerving, the benefits are immense. You don't need to be an actor, in fact, you're better off not being one. You audience wants to feel a real connection during a live stream, and the more authentic you come across as, the more engaging your steam will be.
Last year 20% of online searches were made using voice search, and that number is expected to increase to 50% by 2020. At the same time last year, 60% of surveyed respondents said they had started using virtual assistants and voice search. With Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa powering ahead, you can be sure these numbers will be increasing.
Just as marketers have optimized content for mobile in the past, they are now optimizing content for voice search as well. Because voice search is easier than typing, voice-searches tend to surface more long-tail content while text-search tends to surface sorter phrases.
The current internet population is approximately 3.80 billion, which makes up half of the worlds population! There are always new ways to get your content in front of potential customers, and despite the overwhelming amount of content constantly being produced, there's no reason you shouldn't be getting in on the action.
Marketers have been, and will continue to be, invested in developing effective multi-channel digital marketing strategies. Don't be the one missing out.
It's impossible to predict exactly where the marketing trends will turn in 2018. The digital marketing landscape changes very often, and so anything is possible.
Rather than chasing trends, you're better off always doing your research and keeping an eye on the data as well as the top performers in your market.
Build a quality content strategy that targets the top-performing trends, and constantly update it!
Cheers to the new year!
